 Cottam -- decades later |
Clarence Cottam
Cottam was a colleague and friend of Carson from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He had written about the deleterious effects of pesticides as early as 1946. Carson cited Cottam's work in Chap. 10 of Silent Spring. She consulted him in 1959 about the nature of her writing project. Cottam was awarded the Audubon Medal in 1961 for his "achievement in the field of conservation and environmental protection." He served on the NRC committee on Pest Control and Wildlife Relationships.
Be sure to review Chaps. 1-2,7-10,15 in Silent Spring. You should be able to comment on Carson's credibility, harm to non-target species and indiscriminate use.
